A founding member of the Society, Stoney was a charismatic presence whose humor and swagger gave a jolt of rambunctious fun to Hemingway proceedings. Co-Director of the Hemingway Society’s 2018 conference in Paris, a city he dearly loved, and Distinguished Teaching Professor of English at the State University of New York at New Paltz, he was the author of dozens of articles and books, including several devoted to Hemingway’s sacred landscapes. He was the loving husband of Jane Arden “Sparrow” Stoneback, who passed away in 2008, and a beloved teacher and a generous mentor to generations of young Hemingway scholars. He will be deeply missed.
